"REARVIEW is a suite of thirteen monotypes depicting a nonlinear plot between two subjects. “Rearview” refers to the inherent reversal of an image in printmaking and the idea of moving forward while gazing backward simultaneously. The genesis of this body of work was a small metal emblem I pried off the wall of my Dad’s cabin over a decade ago. Over the past few years, said emblem humbly existed with other bric-a-brac I use to decorate pots of my indoor plants. I never gave it much consideration, though I occasionally wondered what it had belonged to. While thumbing through a vintage LIFE magazine I came across an ad for Nash Motors, making the connection that this metal emblem was once affixed to the radiator of a car. The ad itself was fantastic, showing a woman in the sky reclining in a cloud to demonstrate the luxury of the seats and upholstery. I found that without any context the image was quite surreal – thus I decided to honor and re-envision it in print.
In that same publication was an article detailing an ongoing drought in southern Vermont and how several dowsers were brought in to combat the issue. Not only did I appreciate this article due to my affinity for divination, but found it uncanny given the drought in the Berkshires and across Massachusetts. So, again, I chose to exalt one of the photos in print. Once these pieces existed together I found they had some tension and correlation, but couldn’t quite pin down how or why. This body of work is the consequential exploration of their relationship."
